ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS:
A student's experience

I was introduced to the Alexander Technique on the recommendation of a chiropractor. It was two weeks before a trip to Paris. I wanted to maximize my energy so that I could walk as much as possible. I have MS and get very fatigued if I try to walk more than a couple blocks. One hill can totally do me in. Paris is a walking city, and I wanted to be able to enjoy it.

I had four Alexander lessons with Jano before that trip. In those four lessons I learned about maximizing energy by minimizing muscle tension, keeping my body aligned and relaxed. Those four lessons made a big difference in my trip. With my husband giving me reminders, I was able to realign myself whenever I slipped back into old habits. The difference in my energy level amazed me. I walked further than before, felt less muscle tension, and recuperated more quickly when I did get fatigued.

It’s been over seven years since that trip. I have been studying the Alexander Technique with Jano ever since. It’s wonderful to have this non-chemical option to help maximize my energy, loosen my tight achy muscles, and improve my balance. There are already enough pills and injections in my life. It’s good to be able to do something to help myself that doesn’t require taking more medicine.

Over the years, as new symptoms have occurred, Jano has assessed the changes and helped me create solutions. She has designed movements and exercises to strengthen and loosen where needed, unlocking a knotted leg, strengthening a weak ankle, relaxing tight shoulders. She has also helped me maximize the feeling in my feet, improve my balance, and practice relaxation techniques. Using Alexander Technique and her knowledge of Tai Chi, QiGong, and other body work, she has helped me through every challenge that has come along. I consider working with Jano one of the essentials, right along with taking my medication and seeing my neurologist.
